Fiona Maye( Thompson) is a renowned judge who specialises in cases related to children. She is dedicated, sharp and steely. Her judgements are objective and unwavering despite public pressure. She handles intense media scrutiny with tenacity.This high pressure and busy life is taking a toll on her relationship with her husband Jack (Tucci).
Then comes a case where a 17 yr old Leukaemia patient is refusing blood transfusion because it interferes with his religious beliefs. The case rocks her life in an unusual way. It gives an interesting , unexpected arc to the story and Fiona’s character. It felt like a an intriguing detour.
First and the foremost , let’s talk about the best part of the film, and that is Emma Thompson. She is the bedrock of this film .
Clean cut and impeccable in dressing style and looks ,astute and pragmatic as a professional , razor sharp and eloquent as a person, she is a pleasure to watch. With the new case and the turbulence it brings about in her life, we see the slight chinks in her armour. Loved the way she portrays the subtle nuances of dilemma and emotional upheaval.
Stanley Tucci gives a low key performance in a small but effective role. He is a devout but disgruntled husband pining for the wife’s attention and time . Their marriage is now devoid of physical or emotional intimacy. There’s a mildness to his character that wins our empathy when he is feeling neglected, or demanding attention or throwing tantrum or is just being a supportive husband.

The film has an offbeat premise and Emma Thomson’s performance is the biggest highlight. It was a good one time watch.
