This is going to be that rare Mirzapur review which is not all gush gush. Anticipation and expectation is often the root cause of all evils.
The euphoria around Mirzapur is crazy.The cinema was buzzing, the vibe in the auditorium was energising. The whistles and claps for Kaleen bhaiyya ,Guddu bhaiyya & Munna Bhaiyya & their dhuan-dhaar dialogues, was fun. Audience clearly loved visiting Mirzapur with a bonus of big screen.
If it comes to analysing how I felt about the film, I would say it was a mixed bag.
What I loved – Catching up with the old characters , their antics and claptrap dialogues was like visiting the Mirzapur universe once again. There’s always a charm to enjoying massy cinema ticking all boxes of dialogues ,drama and action.
Taking cues from iconic Mirzapur dialgues, “ Bisaat wahi , pyade phi wahi, gaddi ki jaddo- jahad bhi wahi, toh naya kya ?
Kuchh naye pyade aur kuchh naya andaaz. But does that work ? Well yes ,not entirely though.
I found the beginning of the film abrupt and underwhelming. Without a proper introduction to characters, it seemed more like a sequel ,and the narrative struggles to condense the expansive baseline of the story. Even sequels resort to voice over narration to fill in such gap.The scenes seemed patched together to quickly build up base and make way for act two .
The film is primarily designed to cater to existing fan base.For anyone unfamiliar with Mirzapur universe, I suggest they brush up atleast season one to be able to understand the dynamics and enjoy better.
After building the baseline, the story takes a detour and brings in a new character Babban Bhaiyya (Ravi Kishan in top form). With this novelty value, the story becomes a bit interesting. Since the film was not being able to do justice to the old story , I found the new sub story better as it didn’t have to fight the comparative war . It was fun to see the old characters combating the new angle of politics and rivalry. The film tries to maintain its legacy of gaalis and violence.
Performance wise , everyone is as good as they are in the series. But not everyone gets the same footage.Ali Fazal gets the lion’s share and he does full justice to it. His scenes , performance and dialogues were the most entertaining. Divyendu wins hearts with his spunk and jalwa.Jitender Kumar who fills in for Vikrant Massey does a good job . I did miss Vikrant’s nuances though.Ravi Kishan makes a splash as Babban Bhaiyya with his trademark delivery and style.I feel Pankaj Tripathi’s bhaukaal was muted as compared to actual season 1. Mohit Malik as Birju Lohar makes a mark .
All the other cast pitches in as much as they could but had limited room.
Though I remained entertained for a major pat of the film , it was not without disappointments. Besides the uninspiring start, the narrative lags at many places. It was sad and annoying to see the out of place ,age old trope of “song and dance sequence at the villain’s adda” .
Despite the “much to be wanted “ feeling, the film remains largely entertaining. But it was more about love for the Mirzapur universe, the actors, performances and dialogues. The screenplay and direction could have been better.
The first time ever , a show has been made as a film for big screen. Considering that it was an extremely well made and highly popular show,I feel the makers had a huge advantage but also a huge responsibility. For now , I think the majority of audience are happy and so are the box office figures.
