Singham Returns ( 2024/ Action/ Cinema Release)
Rohit Shetty’s ambitious attempt at this major cop-verse reunion is definitely light fun even if nothing wow.
If you have your expectations toned down, like I did ( which is a must anyways, to be able to enjoy any Bollywood fare theses days), then there’s a lot of chance that you end up enjoying it.
Let me share the list of bad , not so bad and the good , not necessarily in that order.
The best part of the film, is the interesting line up of actors, all of whom bring their own respective charm and charisma.
I was super impressed too see Arjun Kapoor ’s intensity as the negative lead. Have always believed and liked him as an actor. Was glad to see him trying something so widely different and looking great in it.
Ranveer’s part comes is as breath of fresh air and brings in the most chuckles. That man has a natural charm to his goofiness.
Tiger Shroff’s action scenes were a treat to watch. The man owns his stunts like no one else.
Kareena looks beautiful in those gorgeous sarees one after the other. She always makes her roles look as light and natural as air , no matter what the length, arc or scope.
Akshay ’s presence is brief but laden with style and his comic touch.
Ajay Devgn , like the Maryada Puroshattam he personifies in the story, maintains an understated form and makes way for others. His character has been given a pedestal presence.
Deepika’s role and performance was most disappointing. Considering that she wasn’t a part of the cop verse anyways, I don’t understand its relevance. Don’t know how much that lame-action entry scene ( probably designed to appease her fan base) actually achieve.
The first thing that is evident as the movie starts is want of good screenplay and dialogues. I have no qualms is saying that they looked very amateurish, often out of place and at times silly (even in a scene that isn’t supposed to be ). They could have done so much better in both departments.
The base story wasn’t too bad but all that effort of trying to blend so much , couldn’t have been easy by any means.
From New socio political status of Kashmir ,to Stone Pelting, Terrorism, personal enmity angle etc and then the Gen Z issues to Ramayana and trying to establish and propagate its historic and cultural significance … quite much huh.
Except the central characters , there’s not much of similarity with the original Singham verse. We missed the local Maharashtrian touch and the rooted feel.
The amalgamation of the story with Ramayan added an interesting touch wherein we kept trying to connect the characters. But honestly , at times it came across as a conscious effort rather than a natural blend in the story.
The action choreography, which is a trademark of Rohit Shetty , largely depended upon who it was being filmed at. Some of the action scenes with Tiger were super impressive and there was an entire range below, right down to Deepika’s entry shot which was the worst by all means.
To sum it up in the simplest way, the film is a mix bag ,mediocre, light fun, family entertainer , which you could enjoy if your festive fun weekend mode is on and you are willing to take its flaws in your stride.
